#383: Groudon

Oh yeah, Groudon looks scary, alright. And all they had to do
 here was copy and paste Groudon's segmented red plates on a
picture of a tyrannosaurus rex from Jurassic Park. Genius.
Let's cut to the chase here: Groudon isn't as interesting as Kyogre by a long shot. It looks like it is barely able to move, but its apparent stiffness isn't accompanied by Kyogre's beauty and grace. This former gold-medal heavyweight (unfortunately for Groudon, Gen. VII Pokémon Celesteela and - of all things - Cosmoem are now the heaviest Pokémon in existence) is just a giant dinosaur monster controlling the land and the sun, which is exactly why it is sought after by Team Magma. Their leader Maxie's objective in Ruby is to expand the landmass in the world to create an ideal living place for both Pokémon and humans alike, although this was slightly altered in Omega Ruby, in which Team Magma wishes to put an end to the misguided ideal of coexistence and expand the land to give humanity more space on which to build and develop civilization. This puts them in direct opposition to Team Aqua, whose leader Archie wants to awaken Kyogre to increase the amount of water in the world to create a situation in which human beings and Pokémon live in perfect harmony with each other. Of course, Archie's ideals in Sapphire are largely the same as Maxie's in Ruby; the only thing that differs is their means of execution. In Alpha Sapphire Team Aqua's motivations have been significantly altered, with Archie now wanting to erase human civilization from the planet by expanding the oceans, so that Pokémon can live untainted by humanity's progress. In both occasions, the player character is there to save the day, so the NPCs in the Pokémon world really have absolutely nothing to worry about, ever.

I honestly intended to include this part in Kyogre's entry, but I wanted something to talk about in Groudon's as well, so here you go.

Primal Groudon is coming to get you.

Whereas Kyogre is based on the Hebrew legend of Leviathan, Groudon is based on its counterpart Behemoth. It is said that at the end of times the sea deity Leviathan and the land deity Behemoth would engage in a titanic battle that would kill them both. While Behemoth is often depicted as some kind of warthog- or hippopotamus-like creature, which - and let's be honest here - doesn't sound nearly as intimidating as a giant sea serpent, it is considered the unconquerable primal master of the land. This also manifests itself in-game in Groudon's former signature ability Drought and its Primal form's ability Desolate Land: Groudon has the power to scatter rain clouds and make water evaporate with light and heat, which is why it brought down droughts in ancient times in order to save people who had been suffering from terrible floods. It is said to have created the continents by causing volcanic eruptions, and much like Kyogre resting in a deep oceanic trench, Groudon slumbers in magma in the profound depths of the Earth, even though this seems strange because regular Groudon doesn't have the fire type at first. Additionally, fire-type moves deal normal damage to Groudon in-game, which contradicts everything it stands for.

Groudon does get the fire typing on top of its primary ground typing upon Primal Reversion. Usually, this type combination would make Primal Groudon four times weak to water, but its ability Desolate Land summons a sun so scorching hot that all water-type moves evaporate before they have a chance to get into contact with it. Reversely, Primal Kyogre's ability Primordial Sea douses any fire-type moves before they'll be able to as much as touch it, which... isn't actually all that helpful, because Primal Kyogre is a pure water type and resists fire in the first place. Way to go, Game Freak. At least the effects of these abilities last for as long as Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre are on the battlefield. Frankly, Primal Groudon looks like it's much more true to its original purpose than Primal Kyogre is, with the magma flowing through its entire body and all. This magma burns with such an extreme temperature that its body is always shimmering with the haze of its heat, which is to be expected from a creature slumbering so close to the Earth's core, which is proved to be the hottest fucking place on Earth. Now, that's more like it, Game Freak.

Like I did in Kyogre's entry, I won't delve into Groudon's competitive utility too much; it is in Smogon's Uber tier for a reason, and with Swords Dance and a couple of strong offensive moves it can absolutely fucking destroy anything in its path. Even Primal Kyogre doesn't stand much of a chance, unless it is switched in at a later point of the match than Primal Groudon, in which case its Primordial Sea ability activates and the effects of Desolate Land fade away, although the exact oppositie happens when Primal Groudon is switched in last.

(Disclaimer: I meant to say that the effects of Desolate Land overturn the effects of Primordial Sea when Primal Groudon is switched in later than Primal Kyogre, not that absolutely nothing would happen when it enters the battlefield.)

While regular Groudon doesn't pique my interest all that much, its Primal form is a lot more fascinating. Not only does it differ much more than its regular form than Primal Kyogre does, it actually gains something of an advantage over its counterpart as well, something that wasn't the case for at least twelve years. Kyogre is still my favorite Hoenn legendary alongside Rayquaza, so it's useless to say that I'm not entirely happy with that. Still, I think Groudon is worthy of being granted a 4.5-star rating nowadays, something I wouldn't have done a couple of years ago.

#343 - #344: Baltoy & Claydol

Baltoy and its evolution Claydol are a strange set of Pokémon. Found in the desert area of the Hoenn region, Baltoy seems to be a living clay figurine of some sort, which is obviously why it's a ground type. As for the reason why its secondary typing is psychic... I have absolutely no clue. Being a living clay doll doesn't justify its psychic typing, nor do its characteristics: it moves around by spinning on its one foot like a top toy and cleverly balances itself on said foot while it sleeps, and as soon as it spots others of its kind, it conregates with them and then begins crying noisily in unison. Baltoy's psychic typing seems to be predominant, as most of its level-up moves are of its secondary typing, as are the TM and Move Tutor moves it can learn. It doesn't have a shortage of ground-type moves at all, but I figured I'd mention it nonetheless. What's interesting is that Baltoy is an ancient Pokémon, and primitive murals in the ruins of an ancient city it was found in depict it living among the people of old times. Unsurprising, because this Pokémon and its evolution are based on the shakōki-dogū, a 'spaceman' clay figurine from the Jōmon period of Japanese prehistory (c. 14,000 - 300 BC), and Baltoy even shares some traits with a spinning top. The fact that culbuto and ottuki - found in its French and Korean names of Balbuto and Ohttukgun (오뚝군), respectively - both mean 'roly-poly toy' (or 'round-bottomed doll') doesn't seem to matter to Game Freak. Its Japanese and English names seem to take a more general or neutral approach: Yajilon (ヤジロン) is most probably an abbreviation of yajirobe'e, meaning 'balancing toy', while Baltoy may be a contraction thereof.

And Claydol? Well... surely I don't have to explain where its name comes from, right? All I can say is that I think this Pokémon is weird, with its multiple eyes and beaks giving it the appearance of a couple of merged owls. It is more obviously a psychic type, though, as there's an aura of mystery surrounding Claydol and its flavor sure points to it being a psychic type as well. The spherical arms it has are not attached to its body, but are usually kept floating close by due to Claydol's psychic powers. It uses the same telekinetic abilities to move through the air and hovers in midair when it's asleep. Claydol is said to have come to life when an ancient doll made from clay, crafted by an ancient but primitive civilization dating back 20,000 years, was exposed to a mysterious ray of light. The psychic typing is also more eminent in Claydol's foreign names than Baltoy's, especially its Japanese and Chinese ones. For starters, its Japanese name Nendoll (ネンドール) contains the word nen, which is pretty much subject to interpretation: it is found in various compounds having to do with ESP-related phenomena such as nensha ('thoughtography'; the claimed ability to project images from one's mind onto surfaces such as photographic film by psychic means) and nendō ('telekinesis'), although nendo also means 'clay'. Lepumentas is Claydol's German name and originates from the Latin word for 'mind', being mentis, whereas its Chinese name Niànlìtǔ'ǒu (念力土偶) is partly derived from niànlì, which means 'psychokinesis' and also serves as the Chinese name for the move Confusion.

So, how 'bout that Mega Claydol? We don't need for it to become
bulkier, but God knows he needs a special attack boost. This

and that has everything to do with the fact that it is based on the
shakōki-dogū as well. 
One thing's for sure: Claydol won't be using Confusion anytime soon. This thing is a bulky bitch and is meant to tank hits and serve as a valuable support Pokémon. It learns Stealth Rock, with which you can set up rocks that hurt opposing Pokémon every time they're sent to the battlefield, while Rapid Spin removes entry hazards on your side of the field. Magic Coat reflects all entry hazard moves or moves that inflict a status condition (Leech Seed, Toxic, Stealth Rock and Teeter Dance, for example, but also moves like Taunt and Torment) back to the move's user. The Toxic/Protect combo is a classic tactic, although a nicer tactic is to let Claydol hold the Light Clay to extend the duration of moves like Reflect and Light Screen, which raise the entire team's defense and special defense by 50%. However, Claydol also needs a move to attack with, something like Psychic or Earth Power - as long as it's a strong STAB move it should do a considerable amount of damage. The best nature for such a Claydol is Bold or Calm, although a Modest nature can be used if you wanna go offensive. Its special movepool is crazy: Ancient Power, Earth Power, Psychic, Psyshock, Extrasensory, Ice Beam, Shadow Ball, Signal Beam, Grass Knot, Dazzling Gleam and even Charge Beam, a weak electric-type move that has a big chance of raising its special attack by one stage every time it is used. And when it comes to abilities, you don't even have to rack your brains for hours trying to decide which one you're gonna use: Claydol gets Levitate by default. This ability makes it immune to ground-type moves and entry hazards like Spikes and Toxic Spikes, and resistant to rock-type moves and Stealth Rock. How's that for an entry hazard remover?

Personally, though, I am not the biggest fan of Claydol. Yes, it's weird. And yes, I know I said that's what gives Gen. III a little bit of redemption. I don't think Claydol is a good kind of weird, though, rather an awkward kind of weird. The multiple pairs of eyes are unsettling and its head and body are unnecessarily rotund, which gives it too much of an artificial appearance, although its flavor suggests that it is an artificial Pokémon in all aspects. I don't hate Claydol, though. It still has an interesting and original design and flavor, with a unique albeit terrible defensive typing to boot (it is weak to ghost, dark, grass, water, bug and ice). I think a rating of 3 stars is a little bit low, so I'll just give it half a star extra.

#339 - #340: Barboach & Whiscash

On its own merit, Barboach is a pretty cute but boring little fishie. It is based on the pond loach - also called the dojo loach - native to East Asia, and it shares a fair amount of characteristics with this bland and uninteresting fish. Barboach encases itself in mud and buries itself to hide from view, exposing the sensitive barbels that serve as a superb radar system in even the murkiest of water in order for it to detect and determine its surroundings. It secretes a slimy substance to make itself so slippery that it can squirm and slip away when grabbed by prey (or people, for that matter, as its Moon entry states that there are festivals where people compete to see how many they can catch bare-handed), but this film also protects Barboach against certain bacteria in the muddy water from entering its oblong body. Its gray body coloration is very similar to the silver or grayish brown color of the most common type of pond loach, and even its amber-colored shiny may be a reference to the rarer loaches with an orange color, although the shiny form's actual body is still gray.

Things gets more interesting when Barboach evolves into Whiscash, a giant catfish Pokémon with ridiculous whiskers. Whiscash is specifically based on the namazu - or ōnamazu in certain parts of Japan - which is a catfish found in Japanese mythology that is notorious for causing earthquakes and is the inspiration for Whiscash's Japanese name Namazun (ナマズン). And causing earthquakes is exactly Whiscash's shtick, because the earthquakes it triggers when defending its territory against foes extend for over three miles and it can foretell when natural ones will occur as a result of occasionally causing tremors itself. In addition to eating anything that is alive, it is shown eating inanimate objects as well. This could be seen in the episode "Whiscash and Ash" (season 7, episode 35), in which a Fisherman called Sullivan tried to hunt down a Whiscash dubbed Nero for its prominent size but failed because the enormous thing swallowed his Master Ball. Just like that. A season later, another episode with a Whiscash was set to air in Japan, but after the 2004 Chūetsu earthquakes in Niigata Prefecture, which occurred approximately two weeks prior to the scheduled air date, the episode was cancelled. It has never been broadcast in any other country either, and moves like Earthquake and Magnitude have been steered clear of in the entire anime ever since this event.

Naw, Whiscash has hardly gotten any love since then, not even in the competitive scene. That's partly due to the fact that all of Whiscash's stats - barring its HP - are mediocre at best. Base attack and special attack stats of respectively 78 and 76 are nothing to write home about, and respective base 73 and 71 defense and special defense stats are even worse. Fortunately, Whiscash's base 110 HP back up its mediocre defenses neatly, which enables it to 'cash' a few hits that aren't super effective on it - and its water/ground typing makes it weak to only grass-type moves, so that's a plus, although this weakness is a huge one because both water and ground are weak to grass. And let's keep silent about its speed, because Whiscash will hardly move first. Fortunately, there is an answer to that: Dragon Dance. It's an egg move, but it's worth breeding for, because it increases Whiscash's attack and speed by one stage each. It won't make Whiscash an Electrode all of a sudden, but it definitely helps a little. And that attack boost is nice as well, as Whiscash has a more-than-decent physical movepool: it has STAB in Earthquake, Aqua Tail and Waterfall and type coverage in moves like Zen Headbutt, Spark, Stone Edge, Rock Slide and even Bounce. A Jolly nature complements a Dragon Dance set very well, although an Adamant nature isn't bad either and can be used over a Jolly one if you want a little more oomph behind Whiscash's moves. Let it hold a Life Orb, too, and it'll deal some serious damage.

Oh, and make sure your Whiscash has its hidden ability Hydration, which cures any non-volatile status condition when it is raining on the battlefield. Hydration is far more useful than Whiscash's normal abilities Oblivious and Anticipation; the former only keeps it from getting infatuated (seriously though, nobody uses Attract) and the latter warns it for super-effective moves, which is unecessary because you can see grass-type moves coming from miles away.

Whiscash is a funny-looking Pokémon, but it sucks that it isn't just a little bit better competitively. If Dragon Dance had been a level-up move instead of an egg move, I'd definitely consider using this Pokémon in a playthrough. For now, I'll just appreciate it for its simple but effective design and its interesting flavor. I like it if a Pokémon is based on whatever mythology and I think this whole catfish-causes-earthquakes thing is perfectly executed in Whiscash. It's not one of my favorite Pokémon - at least, not just yet - but 4.5 stars will do for now. Don't forget that it's still eligible for a perfect rating; in fact, almost all Pokémon are if they start growing on me.

#328 - #330: Trapinch, Vibrava & Flygon

After the catastrophe that is called a Spinda, it is a relief to review a Pokémon I actually like to some extent. Flygon has been a fan favorite for a long time now, and everyone anticipated a glorious Mega to go with it in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. They were let down when it became clear upon release that there was no Mega Flygon to be found in the entire game because Ken Sugimori suffered from... artist's block. Yeah, Game Freak weren't able to come up with a decent design for Mega Flygon and so they had decided to let the idea go, even though they could've just taken a look at some fan-made art for inspiration.

Jests aside, Flygon has two pre-evolutions we need to look into. Trapinch is its basic stage and doesn't look like its evolutions Vibrava and Flygon at all, and that's because it's based on the larval stage of an antlion, winged insects whose larvae are known for their aggressive and fierce predatory habits. They create conical sandy pits to trap passing ants or other prey and are adorably called doodlebugs in North America sometimes, due to the strange marks they leave in the sand. The fact that the larvae are more aggressive than their winged adult forms may be the reason why Trapinch's attack is so high: it has base 100 physical attack - the highest of all Pokémon that can evolve twice - and absolutely terrible everything else. Vibrava even loses some base attack points before Flygon increases that amount to exactly 100 again. Trapinch's flavor is very much like the natural habits of an antlion larva, in that it builds its nest in a bowl-shaped pit dug in sand and waits there for its prey to stumble inside. Once inside, it is impossible for the trapped prey to escape the pit. Trapinch is a Pokémon that has shown a lot of strength and endurance, as it can go a whole week without having access to any water or food and its giant jaws are strong enough to crush even large boulders. The Japanese and the French even have funny names for this Pokémon to emphasize that characteristic: Nuckrar (ナックラー) is a contraction of 'nutcracker', while Kraknoix is from the French word thereof, craque-noix. Additionally, Nuckrar may also be a play on 'knucker', a type of folkloric dragon that lives in a hole; something that'll make sense once we take a look at Trapinch's evolutions.

so it's kind of a shame it evolves even further. 
Speaking of, Vibrava is probably the least interesting of this bunch flavor-wise, but it's my favorite design-wise. I don't know what it is that makes me like it so much, but I guess it's just a pleasant bug-like design for a Pokémon that isn't even a bug type. Trapinch and its evolutions are all primary ground types, but Vibrava and Flygon have the secondary dragon typing to boot. I wouldn't even have been surprised had they been bug/flying types, or even bug/dragon types, but even though there are four types that could easily be applied to this evolutionary line, a Pokémon can only have two types. So we're stuck with ground/dragon instead, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you consider dragonflies and antlions - the latter are often mistaken for the former - are actually just species of insect, but I'll let it slide (into the sand pit) for now; some species of dragonfly are actually called 'sand dragons' and this could account for Vibrava and Flygon's ground/dragon typing. Vibrava behaves much like a bug, at least, having underdeveloped wings with which it generates vibrations and ultrasonic waves that induce headaches in human beings. It makes its wings grow by dissolving large quantities of prey in its digestive juices and guzzle them down, which it does every day. If you think that is scary, you haven't seen Flygon's Pokédex entries: its wings make a 'singing' sound when they are flapped, earning Flygon the name of 'The Desert Spirit'. Any desert dwellers will think there are ghosts there, while it is actually a Flygon creating sandstorms with it wings in order to conceal itself. It fares well in sandstorms, actually, as the red, insectoid, goggle-like covers over its eyes prevent sand from getting into them.

While I don't think Flygon is as aesthetically pleasing as Vibrava (it has two weirdly drawn antenna-like appendages protruding from its head, as well as two ridiculously small claws and awkward feet), it is definitely better in the competitive scene. Earlier in this review I said that Vibrava loses some base attack points upon evolving from Trapinch and that Flyon gains these back. Well, Flygon is a physical attacker, although its base 80 special attack is good enough to be used for an occasional special move here and there. Because of its ground typing and Levitate ability, entry hazards won't hurt or disadvantage it (Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Sticky Web) or will do only negligible damage (Stealth Rock), whereas its stats allow it to take a couple of hits, although not too many. It's fast and strong, which enables it to run Choice sets, rocking a Choice Band or Choice Scarf in combination with moves like Earthquake, Outrage, Dragon Claw, U-Turn, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Crunch, Superpower, Thunderpunch, Fire Punch and Iron Tail (and its movepool is evidence it should have been a bug type: it has access to Struggle Bug, Signal Beam, U-Turn, Bug Bite, Bug Buzz and Fury Cutter, whether or not through breeding or its pre-evolution Vibrava). Both kinds of sets allow you to run either an Adamant or a Jolly nature; an Adamant-natured Flygon works well with a Choice Band, although it is significantly slower than a Jolly-natured one with a Choice Scarf. You'll have to see what kind of EV distribution works best for you.

And, if you're really experienced in competitive battling, you might want to consider using Flygon as a support Pokémon: its entry hazard resilience makes it a perfect choice for a moveset that removes said entry hazards. Defog and Roost are must-haves, while it still needs something to attack with, preferably Earthquake and U-Turn - the latter to gain momentum if it needs to. Roost already heals half of its HP, but the Leftovers are used for a little recovery ever turn; it's not that much, but Flygon can last a couple of turns longer with this held item.

I don't think I like Flygon as much as should, it being a fan favorite and all, but I'm just not all that impressed by this Pokémon. I like Vibrava a little better, but not significantly enough to give it a separate rating. Therefore, the entire line will have to do with a 3.5-star rating, but a solid one at that: there is little chance this rating will be lowered or increased.

I like the other not-so-dragon-like Pokémon in Hoenn better than this one.

#322 - #323: Numel & Camerupt

Y'know, I feel like Hoenn introduced too big a batch of Pokémon and that Gen. III is just a drag at the moment, even though I know full well I am not posting reviews at regular intervals and even took a month-long hiatus near the end of November 2016 so I could play Pokémon Sun and Moon and enjoy them to the fullest. Not that it has anything to do with today's Pokémon, but this sluggish pace is getting the better of me a bit and I want to review my favorite Pokémon already. This is not a complaint, really; I thoroughly enjoy writing articles like these, but I hope Gen. III comes to an end soon.

Speaking of sluggish, today I'm going to discuss some Pokémon that aren't very fast-paced, either. Numel is a small quadruped most likely based on a dromedary camel, but with a stupid expession on its face that is often associated with cows. Located on its back is a volcano-like hump containing boiling magma of almost 2,200°F (how did anyone measure that, anyway?) that hardens and becomes heavier when it is cooled in water and makes Numel slow down (no shit, it has a quadruple weakness to this element because of its fire/ground typing). Numel is a surprisingly strong Pokémon who has served humans for years with its ability to carry heavy loads up to 220 pounds, but it is so dim-witted that it doesn't even notice when it is stuck - or struck, for that matter. But whereas Numel is dull-witted, Camerupt is prone to losing its temper quickly; when it is enraged, the two volcano-like bone structures on its back (yeah, those humps consist of transformed bone, not rock - Camerupt isn't a rock type, after all) erupt, spewing molten lava of almost 18,000°F, even though its Emerald, HGSS, B2W2 and X Pokédex entries mention that the volcanoes erupt violently every 10 years and that research is still carried out to find the cause of this occurrence.

Other than that, though, can Camerupt hold its own in the competitive scene? It has the same base stat total as Sharpedo, is Team Magma's Maxie's ace as opposed to Sharpedo being Team Aqua's Archie's ace, and like Sharpedo it was blessed with a Mega in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. In itself, Camerupt is very strong - it has base 100 attack and 105 special attack - and moderately bulky, although its defensive stats aren't really anything to write home about, either. The only real downside is its speed, so it doesn't even matter that it becomes even slower when it Mega-evolves, all in exchange for more power and bulk. It'll never hit first anyway, and you might need that attack stat (Mega Camerupt has 120 attack and 145 special attack all of a sudden), so you'd do best to run a Quiet nature - or a Brave nature if you want more physical power than special power. It is an excellent mixed attacker, as it's perfectly capable of running moves like Earthquake, Iron Head and Rock Slide alongside Fire Blast, Earth Power, Flamethrower, Lava Plume, Flash Cannon, Ancient Power and even Solar Beam (on a sun team); and on top of that, moves with additional effects are boosted by its ability Sheer Force. Want more of a tank? Invest in HP EVs and give it the moves Will-O-Wisp and Stealth Rock, so that it can burn foes and hurt opposing Pokémon a little - or a lot, depending on whether or not a foe has a rock-type weakness - every time they enter the battlefield, respectively. And regular Camerupt? This Pokémon resides in PU, the lowest of Smogon's competitive tiers for fully evolved Pokémon, but the strategy stays largely the same: use Camerupt as either a special attacker with a Life Orb or the Choice Specs as a held item - to boost its moves with - or a tank holding the Leftovers for a little bit of recovery every turn.

As for my own opinion of Camerupt... I don't think it looks like a Bactrian camel exactly. Sure, the two humps on its back indicate that it is based on these animals, but camels have elongated necks and usually stand much higher on their feet than Camerupt does. If anything, this Pokémon looks much more bovine, with features specifically related to musk oxen, an animal with the same build and shaggy fur as Camerupt. The only difference is that the musk ox is an Arctic mammal, which Camerupt is obviously not, but maybe that was entirely intentional on Game Freak's part - even though I think I'm giving them way too much credit here. My main problem is Camerupt's Mega form, though. Whereas I mostly think the Mega of a certain Pokémon is a major improvement compared to its regular form, that is unfortunately not the case with Camerupt. Its Mega looks so... off. Its shaggy fur gives its body a much too corpulent look, the legs are too short in proportion to its body, and I actually kinda dislike that stupid grin on its face. Game Freak made its design look more goofy, awkward and, most of all, evil. It looks like it's up to no good, and that's not what Mega Camerupt is about; it has an explosive personality and a chronically short temper, which is why the full-fledged volcano on its back (which is actually the only cool part of its design) constantly erupts, but that's about it. I'll gladly give Camerupt four stars, but that's excluding the Mega. Mega evolution is optional, so it is not required to let Camerupt Mea-evolve, and should you decide to use one after all, it reverts back to what it was after the battle, anyway.

P.S.: Can somebody explain to me what purpose those blue rings on the side of Camerupt's body serve? They don't fit its design at all...

#290 - #292: Nincada, Ninjask & Shedinja

So today we have a couple of ninja cicadas. The basic stage is Nincada, whom I always thought was quite forgettable because it looks boring. It's a bug - a blind one at that, too - and because it cannot withstand sunlight it lives in underground nests at the roots of trees for the majority of its life. Yeah, your blindness is to blame entirely on you, Nincada, so the fact that you have a pair of whisker-like antennae with which you can probe your underground surroundings is a blessing in disguise. I just don't understand how Nincada's evolution Ninjask can see. Not only that; with its base 160 speed, Ninjask is the fastest non-legendary Pokémon in existence and is outsped only by Speed Forme Deoxys (base 180 speed). Ninjask is in fact so fast and moves around at such a high speed that it cannot be seen, even while its cry can clearly be heard. For that reason, this Pokémon was once thought to have the power of invisiblity. Moreover, Ninjask is apparently a bitch to train, as it will disobey its Trainer and cry loudly continuously if it is not trained properly. Not a desirable situation, as hearing its cries for too long induces a headache.

know that it's fast. 
On top of that, it is kind of terrible in the competitive metagame. It may be fast, but it doesn't have the bulk to take a hit and it doesn't have the attack stat to hit very hard. Its attack is decent, but nothing to write home about, and a Swords Dance boost won't do much for it if it is hit by an attack in the same turn. To prevent losing a turn on a set-up move, you could let it hold a Choice Band, but Ninjask doesn't have a whole lot of coverage moves to make use of. U-Turn is used to gain momentum, whereas Leech Life (this move got a boost in Gen. VII) does quite a lot of damage and heals Ninjask at the same time. Aerial Ace is a move with 60 base power and it's the only physical flying-type move Ninjask has access to, while Night Slash is barely worth considering because it's rather weak. You could consider running an Adamant nature over a Jolly one if you want a little more power behind its attacks, but I don't think that would matter much. A Life Orb will even wear it down faster than you'd prefer, even when of your moveslots contains Leech Life. Finally, both its normal Speed Boost and its hidden ability Infiltrator aren't all that useful; Ninjask is already super fast and the ability to bypass the effects of moves like Substitute, Reflect and Light Screen isn't as useful as you'd think. So whatever situation you're in, you're better off with another Pokémon entirely. It's too bad, to be honest, because I really like Ninjask's design.

So is it better to look at Nincada's other evolution, Shedinja? That's right, Nincada has another evolution you could potentially use; in fact, Nincada is the only Pokémon that evolves into two different Pokémon at the same time. If you have an empty slot in your party and a Poké Ball in your bag, Shedinja will magically appear. Well, magically... it is actually the shed exoskeleton of Nincada come to 'life', with an extra halo added to its design. Its unique ability of being a floating carcass incapable of movement makes its secondary typing the ghost type rather than Nincada's secondary ground typing or Ninjask's secondary flying type, but even exoskeletons can be scary: there's a hole in its back that reveals that the inside of its body is actually hollow and dark, possessing no internal organs whatsoever, and it is believed that staring into the black void Ninjask emerged from will cause Shedinja to steal your spirit. You know what the problem is with that? In battles Shedinja's backside is turned to the player character and you're staring straight into the hole on its back. I guess even in the Pokémon world it's merely a superstition, but it's still pretty darn creepy.

However, Shedinja is nowhere near as scary in the competitive scene. Instead, it has the lowest base stat total of all fully evolved Pokémon and it's even the only Pokémon to have a lower base stat total than its pre-evolution. That is due to its unique stat distribution: it is the only Pokémon with only 1 HP - either base HP or actual HP - and because of that trait it has no need for defenses. Shedinja does have base defenses, but they're absolutely useless on it, unless it receives a substitute through Baton Pass and its defense and special defense are factored into damage the substitute takes. Unfortunately, it is also quite slow, but I wouldn't expect anything else from a shed exoskeleton that is only capable of floating, has no fine or gross motor skills and doesn't even breathe.

But if its stats are so terrible, is Shedinja even usable? Yes and no. Shedinja has the Wonder Guard ability, which renders it immune to 13 of 18 attack types (16 of 18 when it is turned into a water type by using Soak on it, which may be a neat strategy in Double Battles); only moves that are super effective on it - rock, fire, flying, ghost and dark - can knock it out, as well as damaging weather and status conditions, entry hazards, and Leech Seed. Furthermore, it is difficult to determine whether an opposing Pokémon is packing a move that Shedinja is weak to, so it's a gamble using it on any competitive team. Parts of the problem are its base attack stat of 90 - it's decent at best - and the lack of coverage moves. However, it can make better use of status moves like Protect and Will-O-Wisp (burn stalling) and has a priority move in Shadow Sneak. There's also the same option you have with Ninjask - namely, set up a Swords Dance and fire away with STAB moves like Shadow Sneak, and X-Scissor (Shedinja doesn't benefit from the healing element of Leech Life; moreover, this move has less PP) - but there's the risk your opponent counters you and then the entire set-up was for naught. That's alright when you have a bulky Pokémon doing that, but Shedinja can take only one hit with a Focus Sash attached, so you'd do better using it for burn stalling and priority. If played on a team with Pokémon that can change the weather or remove entry hazards, Shedinja might become the pivot of your team. Might.

And, if your team is really being threatened by one or multiple damaging weather conditions, you might have the presence of mind to give your Shedinja the Safety Goggles instead of a Focus Sash. That way, it is at least protected against weather conditions like hail or a sandstorm. Alternatively, a Lum Berry heals any status condition instantly, saving Shedinja from fainting to poison or a burn.

thing I learned from writing this article is that cicadas are big bugs. They freak
me out, goddammit!

Shedinja is a remarkable Pokémon and it used to be one of my favorite Pokémon, solely based on its design and flavor. However, when I compare it to other (and new) favorites of mine, I find myself being a tad bit underwhelmed by it, especially since I'm gaining more knowledge about competitive battling. I'm not much of a competitive battler, I have to say, but I've learned a lot since starting this blog and I am positive I could compose a decent team. Ninjask is bad and Shedinja is... a complicated case. I realized I wouldn't even use one in a normal playthrough, so I'll have to deduct at least half a star from its rating, at least for now. What about Ninjask, you ask? Well, I already mentioned that I really like its design, but it's too bad Ninjask is such a frail and relatively weak Pokémon. If only its attack stat was just a little bit better... right? And the same thing goes for Shedinja, too. That means no separate rating; both Pokémon get a solid 4 stars.

#258 - #260: Mudkip, Marshtomp & Swampert

Goddamn, Mega Swampert is on steroids, I'm tellin' ya. Look at the motherfucker in the image on the right and tell me it's not swallowing anabolic substances. Mega Swampert looks like a bodybuilder whose muscles and veins are fit to burst, so it might be best for it to quit that synthetic crap. All jokes aside, though, the image on the right is an excerpt from the July 2014 issue of the Japanese manga magazine CoroCoro Comic, in which Mega Sceptile, Mega Diancie and Mega Swampert were revealed for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. It was made into a variation of an old Mudkip meme called "So I herd u liek Mudkipz" (in correct English: "I heard you like Mudkip"), as Mudkip is Swampert's basic stage. The new phrase said, "I herd u liek MURDER", which was due to Mega Swampert's ridiculously bulky appearance. It didn't quite catch on, as the Mudkip meme had died off about two or three years previous, but at least it made me snigger a little. That's mainly because I knew the "So I herd u liek Mudkipz" meme existed, although I never quite understood it. Apparently it originated in 2005 with the DeviantArt group MudKipClub, an account founded as a place for users to share their love for Mudkip and its evolutions by submitting fan art of them. The owner of the community started posting the phrase "So I herd u like Mudkips" ('heard' probably unintentionally misspelled) on other users' comment walls as an invitation to join the MudKipClub community. The phrase catched on and other users started to post variations of it in comment sections on forums of sites like Fark and Reddit. The spelling of 'like' and 'Mudkips' - although it's more common for Pokémon names to stay the same in plural - slowly changed into 'liek' and 'Mudkipz', and by 2009 the latter two dominated as opposed to their 'original' spellings.

It's curious that, of all Pokémon, Mudkip became a meme. I mean... it's cute and all, but if this "So I herd u liek Mudkipz" thing hadn't become a famous Internet meme, it would easily have been one of the most forgettable starter Pokémon. That's my opinion, anyway, and it's mostly based on the fact that Mudkip is supposed to be an axolotl, an animal that was already the inspiration for the design of Wooper. Mudkip does have some features that could resemble those of axolotls, but its classification as the 'Mud Fish Pokémon' might refer to gilled African lungfish. Additionally, its Japanese name Mizugorou (ミズゴロウ) contains the word mutsugorō and indicates - along with the English name of Mudkip - that this Pokémon is based on a mudskipper, while its German name Hydropi refers to the mudpuppy. It's unsurprising Mudkip keeps being compared to an axolotl though, as all above-mentioned critters have some of the features axolotls have as well. At least they're all a little slippery, I imagine. As far as Pokédex entries go, Mudkip can use the sensitive radar receptors on its headfin to determine changes in air and water currents and that's pretty much all there is to say about it.

Mudkip evolves into what is probably the most awkward middle stage of a starter Pokémon I have ever seen. Marshtomp looks both goofy and creepy, and for the most part I can attribute that to its unsettling eyes in combination with its wide mouth. Have you seen its frickin' Gen. VI sprite??? Swampert has the same eyes, but at least it looks a little more intimidating than Marshtomp, whereas the latter is supposed to be somewhat cute. Except it doesn't look cute to me, and I also don't like its design as a whole. As for its Pokédex entries, none actually stood out. Its has a thin, sticky film enveloping its body that enables it to live on land, but it likes to play in and moves faster through mud than actual water. It looks up mud pools when it becomes weak and dehydrated due to its skin drying out and wants to replenish its fluids. Eh. I'm sure mudskippers are called that way for a goddamn reason. Marshtomp's headfin does resemble a murmillo helmet, a helmet worn by a type of gladiator during the Roman Imperial age, and it might be evidence of Swampert's oncoming destructive abilities (note that Mudkip is already stronger than it looks, as it can smash rocks that are bigger than itself, and Mudkip is a mere 1'04"). Swampert, who can apparently be both bipedal and quadrupedal according to its game sprites, is where all the excitement is. Most of its Pokédex entries elaborate on what Mudkip's entries have told us, like Swampert's ability to sense the most subtle of changes and differences in the sounds of waves and tidal winds and its tremendous strength: it can move boulders weighing more than a ton, is capable of towing a gigantic ship while swimming, and propels through water faster than a jet ski. Swampert's vision is excellent, as it can see perfectly in even the murkiest bodies of water.

Most of Swampert's flavor doesn't follow through in the games, though; it is quite slow, and Muddy Water still has terrible accuracy compared to Surf. Game Freak didn't lie about its power, though, as its base 110 attack stat is absolutely nothing to sneeze at. With base 100 HP and 90 defenses, it even has some considerable bulk behind it. which makes it more than viable as a Relaxed- or Impish-natured support Pokémon with moves like Stealth Rock, Roar and an attacking move or two rather than a powerhouse. Let it hold the Leftovers and it will endure the battle for quite some time. When you run a Careful or Sassy nature (both boost its special defense) you can run a Curse set, which allows Swampert to pump up its attack and defense and annihilate incoming foes. It becomes super fast as Mega Swampert, however, due to its excellent Swift Swim ability. If you set up the rain, this ability will activate and double Mega Swampert's speed stat, allowing it to sweep pretty much everything but grass types with its base 150 attack stat. All it needs is Rain Dance, Waterfall, Earthquake and Ice Punch, although it learns Hammer Arm, Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Aqua Tail, Iron Tail and Power-Up Punch if you need any these moves. This Rain Dance strategy doesn't explicitly require a Jolly nature, so you can max out its attack stat by slapping an Adamant nature on it. Take note of this, though: an Impish nature on a regular Swampert doesn't work if you want to use the special-based Scald as support, and due to its speed, an Adamant nature on a regular Swampert is more effective if you want to go the offensive way.

Swampert is amazing. I never used it in the days of Ruby and Sapphire, but I have gotten a newfound love for this slimy badass - or, more specifically, its Mega - since I used it a couple of times in Omega Ruby and realized this thing is just as good as the other Hoenn starters. Hoenn is by far not my favorite region and the Hoenn Pokémon aren't really my favorite, but I have to say the starters of this region are the absolute best, no exceptions. This is the first - and only - generation in which I'm giving all of the starters perfect ratings, and I don't regret it.

#246 - #248: Larvitar, Pupitar & Tyranitar

Okay, let me confess something here: I don't care for pseudo-legends all that much. Other people would easily give all of them five-star ratings if they would be doing this whole rating thing, but I won't. With the notable exceptions of Metagross and Hydreigon, I don't like pseudos as much as I actually should, and I think the fact that I like Dragonair more than Dragonite is a really good example of that. Don't get me wrong here: I still like Dragonite to some extent, and I'm definitely not going to bash Tyranitar or any of the other pseudos, but you shouldn't expect me to go fanboying over them, either.

However, you can't deny that Tyranitar are terrible parents. Its basic form Larvitar is born deep underground, far from its parents, and takes a long time coming to the surface: it will have to eat the surrounding soil before it can see its parents' faces. It will only enter its pupal form - i.e. evolve into Pupitar - upon eating an entire mountain's worth of earth, although in the games it just evolves at level 30. As a Pupitar it becomes trapped in a shell that is so hard that it can even withstand a collision with solid steel, and it has to create a gas inside its body that it compresses and forcefully ejects to propel itself like jet. So it has to fart to move around? That's gross. However, it can move freely inside the shell while its arms and legs are developing, and its thrashing has such destructive power that it can topple a mountain. And Tyranitar? Tyranitar can crush a mountain with one hand. One hand. So... yeah. It has a vicious and insolent nature (see, I told you these things are bad parents!), and it will always be looking for a chance to fight because it knows its thick and rocky hide gives it a good resistance to all forms of attack. It is rarely scared and will never flinch at anything - except at a Serene Grace Air Slash from a Togekiss or a Serene Grace Iron Head from a Jirachi. If it's enraged, Tyranitar will set off outstanding non-STAB Earthquakes (the entire evolutionary line are rock types, but the secondary ground type changes into the dark type when Pupitar evolves into Tyranitar) that can completely change the entire landscape, often forcing cartographers to draw up new maps. So all things summarized, Tyranitar is nothing short of savage.

Now, you'd think that the entire evolutionary line are based on the notorious species of tyrannosaurus rex, but that is not necessarily the case. All of their Japanese names end with the suffix -giras, which may be derived from kirai ('hate') or Gojira and Angiras. Those are the Japanese names of the lizard-like creatures Godzilla and Anguirus, respectively, and are the monsters most often used in old Japanese tokusatsu movies, live-action fantasy or horror films with considerable use of special effects. As Anguirus is based on the ankylosaurus, it is more likely that Godzilla was the inspiration for Larvitar, Pupitar and Tyranitar - or Yogiras (ヨーギラス), Sangiras (サナギラス) and Bangiras (バンギラス) in Japanese. Godzilla itself was designed by combining the tyrannosaur, iguanodon and stegosaur, along with adding some crocodilian features, so we're coming full circle here. And if someone may be wondering what the prefixes of these Pokémon's Japanese names mean: Yogiras is derived from yōji ('baby') and/or yōsei ('larva'), Sangiras contains sanagi ('pupa'), and Bangiras and its foul temper were inspired from yaban ('savage') and/or ban ('barbarian'). That is awfully accurate, I'd say. Additionally, Tyranitar's English name is most likely derived from 'tyrant', referring to its vicious nature, rather than tyrannosaurus rex.

Tyranitar is also a beast in competitive play. Aside from its speed, its base stats are decent to excellent, and it only gets better as Mega Tyranitar. It's not true that there isn't any attack that will leave a scratch on T-tar, but at least Game Freak have shown some consistency by giving it good defenses. Its base 110 defense is already sky-high, but because it's a rock type, its base 100 special defense will even increase by 50% during a sandstorm. And this only applies to regular T-tar. Its Mega has a base stat total of 700, with 164 attack, 150 defense and 120 special defense (before its ability Sand Stream whips up a sandstorm). Holy cow. You'd think it would be impossible to beat Mega T-tar at all, but it is kind of slow and has a whopping seven weaknesses, among which a quadruple one to fighting-type moves, so it has its flaws. There are some useful sets for regular Tyranitar, among which a Jolly Choice Scarf set and an Adamant Choice Band set, both with the Sand Stream ability and staple moves like Crunch, Stone Edge, Pursuit (a 40-power move that does double damage when the foe switches out on the turn it is used) and either Superpower or Earthquake. It can even be used for support, like setting up Stealth Rock and paralyze foes with Thunder Wave, but when using Mega Tyranitar I'd recommend going with a Dragon Dance set. Dragon Dance raises Mega
T-tar's attack and speed by one stage, and when it manages to pull one off, you're in big trouble, because it can finish off your Pokémon with a plethora of STAB and coverage moves.

Now, I have another confession to make: I am NOT a fan of Mega Tyranitar. The spikes protruding everywhere from its body and the scales, which are now red instead of blue and enable it to emanate more power because they're seething with energy, only make it overdesigned. The scales do make Mega Tyranitar look more vicious, but they only enhance the notion that there are too many unnecessary additions to its design. So my rating today is for regular Tyranitar, who already looks savage on its own and didn't really need a Mega in the first place. And even though Tyranitar is naturally savage, its blue scales actually give it a somewhat softer look and don't make it look like it's overdesigned. I like Tyranitar more than Dragonite, but it's not one of my favorite Pokémon, so I'll guess it'll have to do with a 4.5-star rating. Which, by the way, isn't bad by any means.

P.S.: There's actually a Smogon Mega T-tar set called 'Indominus Rex', named after the new made-up dinosaur hybrid from Jurassic World. That's just fucking hilarious.

#231 - #232: Phanpy & Donphan

Okay, y'all know I have a fondness for cute Pokémon. And let's be honest here, Phanpy is totally cute, but at the same I think its design is just really bland. The only features that makes it look slightly interesting are the red pads on its ears and trunk, but even then Phanpy isn't an overly fascinating Pokémon. Its Pokédex entries mention characteristics that can be pretty much found in real-life elephants, including using its ears as a fan when it's hot or using its trunk to take a shower. It even makes its nests digging a vertical pit in the soil at the edge of a river. It's actually pretty weird Phanpy prefers to be in the vicinity of water, because it's a ground-type Pokémon and ground types are usually weak to water - except when they have a secondary typing or ability that balances out or nullifies that weakness, that is. That is not the case here, however: Phanpy and Donphan are both pure ground types. But whereas Phanpy's playful nature can be potentially painful to humans because it doesn't know its own strength and can send someone flying if it bumps that person too hard with its snout, Donphan can curl up into a ball and violently roll around like a wheel (it does look like a tire when it's rolled up), starting a rampage that will be almost unstoppable. Aside from the rolling thing, I'm pretty sure I've seen these rampage shenanigans fly by on this blog at least three fucking times, so to me it's as if Game Freak couldn't come up with something better.

Now, this is less accurate. Phanpy takes showers using its trunk, but it doesn't create
entire waterfalls. :')

The anime, however, shows that this ability is further used as a form of courtship display, as male Donphan will have rolling competitions to demonstrate their toughness to females. That's pretty much it, I'm afraid. Donphan move in herds and the leader is the one with - you guessed it - the largest tusks. The leader is always the one with the largest something; I haven't seen any exception to the rule yet. At least it learns ground-type moves by level-up, unlike Phanpy. Come to think about it, that is a little bit odd; Phanpy learns Earthquake and Bulldoze, two moves Donphan learns naturally, through TMs (and even Fissure through means of breeding), so why not include them in its level-up movepool? It makes no sense.

Phanpy is not where it's at competitively, though. It's Donphan who takes the spotlight with its excellent stats: its base attack and defense are both a fantastic 120 (it is said that its tackles are strong enough to bring down houses and that its armor-like hide is so thick that a normal attack won't leave a scratch on it), while it its able to back its defense up with its very solid base 90 HP stat, although for some weird reason Phanpy has the exact same base HP as Donphan does. Unfortunately, Donphan is very slow and cannot take special hits very well. That's why I have a tactic that I hope will work, as I'm not that much of a competitive player: Assault Vest Donphan. Run a Donphan with a Careful nature, so that it has slightly higher special defense, and let it hold an Assault Vest, which boosts its special defense by 50% but limits it to using only damaging moves. That is fine, because you can choose from a plethora of physical moves to use on Donphan: Earthquake, Stone Edge, Rock Slide, Play Rough, Gunk Shot, Poison Jab, Seed Bomb, Knock Off, Iron Tail, Ice Shard, Fire Fang and Thunder Fang. It even has access to Rapid Spin to get rid of entry hazards, which - unlike Defog - does a little damage and is thus very viable for an Assault Vest set. Furthermore, invest 252 EVs in HP, 252 EVs in attack and 4 in special defense, and you'll have an overall bulky offensive Donphan. Why not try it? It can't hurt, right?

(Disclaimer: Yo guys, I swear to Arceus that I came up with this set for Donphan before I checked Smogon. It is more common for competitive Donphan to know Stealth Rock and carry an item like the Leftovers or a Choice Band, but an Assault Vest set is indeed mentioned on Smogon's website, albeit the recommended ability and EV spread are different. Guess I'm not that bad at composing competitive sets, now am I?)

Personally, I never really cared for Donphan. Admittedly, it is a very good Pokémon to use on any occasion, whether it is in the PSS's Battle Spot or just a regular playthrough. Sometimes I almost think it could easily be forgotten, until I realize it's actually a commonly used Pokémon because it sports some good competitive utility. However, I don't see myself using this thing anytime soon, and I guess I should leave it at that. I don't hate it in the slightest, but I don't think it's in the top percentage of Pokémon either.

#220 - #221, #473: Swinub, Piloswine & Mamoswine

Swinub is one of those Pokémon that has gained significance due to its final evolution, Mamoswine, which was introduced two generations later than Swinub and Piloswine. Of course, Swinub itself is nothing special. With a base stat total of 250 it is the weakest ice-type Pokémon in existence, and it stays that way until it evolves into Piloswine at level 33 and finally becomes useful. While it is obviously a piglet - a wild boar piglet at that, considering the stripes on its back - it also has some traits of Peruvian guinea pigs, which have long, shaggy hair that even covers their little legs, as is the case with Swinub. Swinub likes a particular type of mushroom that grows under dead grass, and it searches for them by smell, often discovering hot springs buried under ice in the process. It reminds me of the pigs that were often used for locating and extracting a rare and very expensive type of mushroom delicacy called the truffle, although the use of these so-called truffle hogs has been prohibited since 1985. It seemed that the pigs had an extremely strong appetite for these truffles, which caused damage to the truffles' mycelium (the vegetative part of a fungus) during the excavation and dropped the production rate of the area for some years. These days, well-trained dogs are used to find the delicacy.

Swinub is like that, too: if it smells an enticing fragrance, it dashes toward it and won't stop until it finds the source. Piloswine is a bit more 'sophisticated', so to speak, as it uses its sensitive nose and ears to check its surroundings instead. It does that because its eyes are usually covered up by tufts of fur and is unable to see properly. Its tusks look insignificant, but they are made of ice, thicken when it snows and have occasionally been proved to be lethal. While Piloswine doesn't have visible hooves, not even when its legs can be seen in full glory, its Pokédex entries talk of hooves that ensure even footing on icy ground, which indicates that Piloswine may be based on a yak. But that idea is thrown out of the window when it evolves into Mamoswine by leveling it up while it knows Ancient Power. Mamoswine, as its name suggests, is based on a mammoth or mastodon - both belong to different genera; they are classified as mammuthus and mammut, respectively. In any case, both are proboscideans that are distant ancestors of the elephant. Mamoswine, however, has a pig's snout instead of a proboscis (also called a 'trunk'), although such hybrid Pokémon are not uncommon. It's interesting to know that even in the Pokémon world there were ice ages, and Mamoswine allegedly disappeared after the last one, until one was dug up from soil/ice (Platinum and HeartGold seem to disagree on which one it is) dating back 10,000 years. To much amazement, it woke up, having survived harsh cold and severe hunger for so many years. It's a bit illogical to say Mamoswine's population thinned 10,000 years in the past while Swinub and Piloswine kept 'existing', but whatever. This is Game Freak we're talking about after all, so what else should I have expected?

Well, what you can expect is a competitive monster. Mamoswine has some beefy HP and a mammoth attack stat - sorry, I had to - with which it can endure quite some hits and hit back as hard as it possibly can. A Life Orb set is obvious here, with a Jolly nature for some more speed, which it needs, or an Adamant nature to boost its attack even further. Its hidden ability Thick Fat is the best option here, as it halves damage from incoming ice- and fire-type moves, the latter of which Mamoswine usually has a weakness to. Because it's quite bulky, it can set up Stealth Rock and proceed annihilating things with moves like Icicle Crash, Earthquake, Superpower, Iron Head, Knock Off, Stone Edge and Rock Slide, while Ice Shard is a rather weak move that does have increased priority. It depends on what you need. Unfortunately, it has no means of boosting its attack apart from a Choice Band, but that item limits it to using one move only.

A Mamoswine set is kind of straightforward, as you - and your opponent, for that matter - know exactly what's gonna come. Evolving Piloswine is tedious, as you have to wait until you get to a Move Relearner in order for them to teach your Piloswine Ancient Power, but at least the result is satisfying. Design-wise I'm not Mamoswine's biggest fan, but at least Game Freak's attempt to create a worthy evolution for Piloswine has paid off. I'll give it a 4-star rating, but only just.
